How to choose the right hiking boot

The right boot depends on your trails, your climate, and your foot shape — not on which brand has the biggest marketing budget. Four questions to ask before buying.

💧 What terrain do you hike on?
Muddy, wet trails need aggressive lug depth — the Speedcross 6 scores 9.7 for grip. Dry, rocky trails need a different outsole compound entirely. Do not use a mud boot on dry terrain — it slips.
☀︙ What is your climate like?
Waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex keep water out but trap heat. In warm or humid conditions a non-waterproof boot with high breathability keeps feet cooler and drier through perspiration management. See our full hot weather guide →
👣 What is your foot shape?
Narrow feet fit Salomon and Hoka well. Wide feet need Keen's roomy toe box or specific wide sizing from Merrell. Getting this wrong leads to blisters regardless of how good the boot scores overall.
💵 What is your budget?
The Merrell Moab 3 at $110 scores 7.9 — genuinely competitive with boots costing $50 more. Spending more does not guarantee a better score. Check the value dimension in each review for the honest picture.

How these scores are calculated
Every Gearvise score is calculated from a minimum of 80 verified owner reports using a weighted formula across six dimensions — grip (25%), breathability (25%), weight (20%), durability (15%), value (10%), and comfort (5%). The full methodology is publicly documented. Read the full methodology →
